Most energy forecasts point to continued growth in the worldwide petroleum demand. However, new heavy- oil reservoirs are deep and located offshore, necessitating costly and complex infrastructure and operations. One serious challenge with deepwater petroleum production is the solids or wax deposition, which can cause plugging of pipelines and process equipment, requiring hundreds of millions of dollars for its control and remediation. Wax deposition involves liquid-to-solid phase transformation of paraffins, which is a complex process influenced by cooling or crystallization rates, thermal and shear histories, and the composition.
