The vision of autonomic computing is a future in which computing systems are self-managing, that is, systems that can manage themselves in accordance with objectives provided by human administrators. Self-management, in turn, has been characterized as comprised of four essential self-* properties: self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing and self-protection. Complete realization of the vision of autonomic computing is a grand challenge, requiring advances in several fields, particularly systems, software architecture and engineering, policy specification and utilization, modeling, optimization, as well as, learning, knowledge representation and reasoning.
