In nature, yeasts in the subdivision Ascomycota are found mostly at the interface between insects and plants, as for example in nectar or the sap of injured trees. In the last decade, my students and I have shown that the interaction of yeasts with small sap beetles that inhabit short-lived flowers is highly specific. Some of our work has been pivotal in demonstrating that the traditional view that all microbes are everywhere is no longer tenable. The currently proposed research aims at determining some of the factors that determine specificity.
