Molecular dissection of the interaction of tomato ringspot virus with its host

Viruses can cause severe diseases of economic importance in plants. Nepoviruses are economically important worldwide on a variety of crops including but not restricted to: grapevine, small fruits, fruit trees, soybean and ornamentals. They are currently controlled with toxic pesticides that kill their nematode vector and prevent their spread in the field. Viruses are obligate parasite and use resources from their hosts (enzymes, organelles) to accomplish the various steps of their life cycle. However, plants defend themselves and erect barriers or defence responses to prevent virus invasion. Viruses have evolved to evade or counteract these defense responses in order to succesfully invade the plants. We propose to study the interactions between nepoviruses and their plant hosts that facilitate the establishment of the virus disease. The long-term objectives of this research is to provide a better molecular understanding of these interactions, that will allow the development of new methods to engineer durable resistance to virus infection and alleviate the need for toxic pesticides.
