The use of nitrogenous fertilizers in farming is the largest input cost to producers and can also have a profound impact on the environment. Given the need to increase yields world-wide due to increases in population and changes in diet, it is crucial to use every tool available to enhance the economic and environmental sustainability of crop production to meet this need. Therefore, nutrient use efficiency is a problem the plant biology community can no longer afford to ignore. It is our belief that a co-operative effort needs to be made to determine what approaches are being used to improve nutrient use efficiency and identify the important missing pieces of science. This Workshop will focus on developing a set of proposals to identify how the public, private and philanthropic sectors can work together to address this important issue. While recognizing the significant challenges associated with developing these types of collaborative relationships, we firmly believe that the time has come to focus, as a community, on solving some of agriculture's more significant problems. Furthermore, although the challenges differ depending on the country in question, this is truly a global problem. Therefore, we want to bring an international group together to develop an action plan.
