Annual crop production in Canada contributes approximately $20 billion to the economy. However, over 50% of potential crop yields are not realized because plants growing in the field are exposed to multiple and simultaneous stresses such as periods of drought, freezing, nutrient deficiency and pathogens. These stresses are projected to increase in the future due to the complex effects of global climate change. Research on the mechanisms through which plants respond and adapt to environmental stresses is therefore important to ensure a reliable and sustainable source of food for a growing population.
