Biologists can record and monitor the sounds that wild animals produce to gain insight into their movement patterns, reproductive activities, and population sizes. We seek NSERC support for 16 Wildlife Acoustics Song Meters (programmable digital recorders with high accuracy time synchronization). In concert with new software developed in the lead investigator's research laboratory, these recorders will permit long-term acoustic and spatial monitoring of free-living animals. The equipment will be used to record animals living in the Canadian arctic, in southern Canada, and endangered ecosystems in the tropics. The research will shed new light on the ecology and evolutionary biology of animals in different environments, and provide new research methods for monitoring animals and surveying biodiversity.
