CHNS analyzer and custom-built filter holders for in-situ large volume pumps

Funding is requested for (1) the purchase and installation of a CHNS elemental analyzer for carrying out quantitative determinations of the C, H, N and S contents of sediments, rocks, plankton and samples of suspended and settling particulate materials from marine and fresh waters, and (2) the upgrade of in-situ large volume pumps used to collect suspended and sinking particles in the surface and deep water of the ocean. The new instrument and upgrades will support research on the carbon cycle in the ocean, the acquisition of carbon and related biogenous elements by phytoplankton, food web structure, and the construction of palaeoceanographic records of organic productivity and burial that track changes in ocean-atmosphere variability in the past.
