The most surprising discovery in cosmology since Edwin Hubble observed the expansion of the Universe is that the rate of this expansion is accelerating. This either signals that a mysterious Dark Energy dominates the energy density of the Universe, or that our understanding of gravity on large scales is incorrect. The implications for physics and astrophysics are profound, and refining our understanding requires new higher-quality measurements of the expansion rate of the Universe as a function of time.
