Aircraft fly under autopilot modes for a large percentage of the flight time. However, the technology behind the design of autopilots has not changed dramatically in the last decades. This situation is however prone to change as recent aviation incidents while aircraft are flying in autopilot mode have brought attention to the behaviour of traditional autopilots and to their limitations. These limitations are especially significant in the presence of large disturbances such as severe gust winds and icing conditions.
