Design & optimizatiion of public transport & airport systems

Sustainable provision of mobility for the population requires efficient systems such as public transport systems which have significant economies of scale. The main objective of the research is to design and optimize public transit and airport systems that provide a balance between the level of service (L of S) provided & the costs of the system. This involves the minimization of the total cost consisting of time (and delay) related "costs" to passengers & the system capital and operating costs. Three sub-projects are (a) Optimal aircraft de-icing procedures at airports taking into account passenger and airline delay costs and system operating costs, (b) Reliability of bus routes with explicit consideration of travel time and delay costs as well as operating costs, and (c) Design of Light Rail Transit (LRT) networks. All three projects are related to the theme of "efficient public transport systems" and will be subject to similar optimization techniques. This research will be mainly based on transportation engineering, analytical modeling and optimization.
