This research focuses on the precipitation type transition region within winter storms. This region is associated with freezing rain, ice pellets, wet snow, and their combinations. Many winter storm impacts stem from such precipitation and, in the case of mountainous terrain, the separation between rain and snow has major implications for hydrology. Given the lack of attention to this important issue, the objectives of this proposal are to determine the detailed features of winter precipitation, to better undertand how these arise over flat and sloped terrain, and to apply the ensuing results to weather prediction, hydrology, and climate studies.
