A fluidized bed is a type of chemical reactor in which a particle bed is contacted by an upward-flowing fluid stream. The resulting fluid-particle suspension takes on fluid-like properties that the particles alone cannot attain. Fluidized beds have been employed industrially for more than 80 years, but significant uncertainty continues to exist regarding the nature of the complex multiphase flow inside the bed. Hence design, scale-up, and troubleshooting of fluidized systems can carry significant technical and financial risk.
