In wetlands, lakes, and reservoirs biomass decomposes in absence of oxygen, whose provision from the atmosphere is slow. An environment develops that withholds large amounts of carbon and nutrients from recycling to the atmosphere and surface waters and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Changes in climate-related transport of water and energy alter the rates of these processes. The research examines chemical and physical control mechanisms on decomposition of biomass in these environments. These are used to analyze how the critical role of soils and sediments in stabilization of climate and nutrient status of Canada freshwater resources are impacted by climate change.
