In the last two centuries, the impact of human activities on nature has been growing dramatically. Groundwater contamination by hazardous substances including organic contaminants has become a serious widespread problem, representing a substantial liability. An EPA survey in 1982 reported that 20% of drinking water wells showed contamination by synthetic organic chemicals. The combination of extensive use, volatility, accidental spills that occur during production, storage or transportation activities and chemical stability has led to widespread contamination of groundwater and soil by such ubiquitous and recalcitrant pollutants.
