The research proposal is for funding to cover part of the cost of a second phase of testing to document behaviour of reinforced concrete block construction built using a new self-reinforced concrete block (SRB). The "self reinforcing" consists of a perforated tubular shaped metal confining device that is embedded within the body of hollow concrete block during manufacture using standard block making equipment. This form of reinforcing within manufactured block had not been successfully attempted prior to the initial research phase of this research. Its purpose is to improve the performance of concrete block construction under earthquake loading so that this form of construction can better compete with other structural building systems.
