Our team of investigators conduct basic research in physiology and metabolism. Animal models are important tools in basic science research. In particular, there are growing numbers of genetically altered mice or uniquely bred rat models that have become readily available. Without these models many significant advances in our fundamental understanding of physiology and metabolism would not be possible. Our department has experienced tremendous growth through the hiring of 7 new faculty hires and also growth of existing research programs. A significant barrier exists to meeting current needs and continued expansion of research activities. We are in need of a biobubble units to meet our urgent needs to address a critical need to not only support the needs of existing and new faculty hires, but also to advance research into new areas. These units permit the housing of specialized research animals (mouse, rat and rabbit models) used in cancer, immunology and gut research, requiring a high level of environmental containment. Currently, we are at maximum capacity in our facility. Expansion can be readily achieved through the use of cutting edge biobubble units. These units are also highly cost effective and at a third of the cost of traditional and expensive brick and mortar rooms that require specialized humidity and air exchange systems linked to the building infrastructure. The acquisition of a the proposed biobubble units will address a significant need for 15 researcher laboratories and upwards of 100 of their trainees.
