User Driven Modeling of Detailed Shapes

We live in a three-dimensional world where the shape, or geometry, of objects is one of their major characteristics. Consequently, computer applications that deal with real-life objects, such as computer graphics, engineering, or medical visualization, require tools to create and process 3D shapes. Until recently the creation of new 3D content was the realm of expert modellers and artists. However, with the proliferation of computers into every aspect of our lives, an increasingly diverse set of users is becoming interested in creating new, personalized, 3D content. Architects aim to quickly convey new building designs, engineers and scientists aim to generate virtual prototypes for validation, and members of the general public aim to design everyday objects or personalize their favorite virtual worlds. In all of these cases users expect the created models to reflect the complexity of real-life shapes. Unfortunately existing modeling methodologies fail to address this need, as they require significant time, expertise, and artistic talent to create complex, detailed shapes.
