Mixing in the surface waters of the oceans controls the sink of heat and carbon to the deep ocean, and the upwelling of biologically important nutrient to the sea surface. These fluxes are a major unknown in climate and biological productivity budgets. They are notoriously hard to quantify because mixing in the upper ocean is complicated, and tends to be sporadic and concentrated under winter storms, when it is very difficult to collect shipboard measurements.
