The goal of our research is to create new techniques of communication between users and computers through development of interfaces that are not restricted to computers of any particular shape or form. These interfaces, known as organic user interfaces (OUIs), have only recently been made possible through advances in display technologies, such as the new flexible display screens. Our lab is internationally at the forefront of this exciting new development in computer user interfaces, and the need for the requested equipment is critical to our mission. OUIs will feature shape-based, multi-touch inputs that operate on wrap-around, thin-film, flexible display surfaces that can be made in any three dimensional (3D) shape or form. Some OUIs will involve virtual, curved and flexible 3D designs projected onto display surfaces. Others will involve physical 3D implementations of plastic, cardboard and paper-like computers in all sorts of product shapes.
