As existing electronic and optical devices get smaller, they approach the fundamental limits set by quantum mechanics and a new paradigm has to be adopted for future progress. A promising direction for future quantum devices is based on coherence in matter. In a thermal incoherent light source, such as a light bulb or a candle, photons are emitted randomly. But one can design a device that forces them to move coherently in a single state - a laser. Similar states can be achieved with matter particles. Bose Einstein condensation of cold atoms is a Nobel Prize winning achievement demonstrating such matter coherence. Our lab has shown several new phenomena using cold-atom condensates. However, laser cooling atoms presents significant technical and financial challenges.
