This proposal is a request for a high-field/high-homogeneity superconducting magnet to be used for muon spin rotation (muSR) studies of advanced materials at the Centre for Molecular and Materials Science (CMMS) at TRIUMF. The behaviour of materials under the influence of high magnetic fields provides a window into understanding the physics of complex phenomena at a subatomic or quantum level. The proposed 9 T, 10 ppm magnet will be used on the newly constructed M20 surface muon beam line, where it will support a unique research instrument. In particular, it will provide the cohort of Canadian and international users of the CMMS facility with the capability to measure muSR signals in samples subjected to high magnetic field over a time range that is twice as long as what is possible anywhere else in the world. The combination of high magnetic field and a long muSR time window will among other things, facilitate investigations of competing orders, enable determination of local spin susceptibilities, and allow for studies of high-field slow relaxation phenomena.
