Future wireless systems will need to offer, for a variety of applications and without limitations to the user location, a high quality access to the Internet similar to what is available today in fixed wired networks. Advanced multi-antenna technologies will most likely be crucial in achieving the target peak spectral efficiency of next generation wireless networks. But, more important than the peak data rate will be the ability of future systems to reliably achieve large data rates in most of the cell coverage area. Furthermore, multi-antenna techniques can only deliver high data rates for signal to noise plus interference ratio (SINR) higher than what is typically available in large areas of the cell. It is therefore necessary to find tools to improve the SINR and multi-hop relaying techniques have been identified as a key approach to achieve this goal. In a relay-based deployment, intermediate relay stations are used to establish a link between the base station and distant mobile users and represent a cost effective solution, versus deploying new base stations, to extend coverage and improve the average spectral efficiency. The goal of the proposed research program is to determine how advanced multi-antenna relaying transmission and cooperation techniques can be beneficial to next generation infrastructure-based cellular networks. More specifically, the research will focus on novel multi-antenna and multi-user MIMO relaying techniques, efficient resource allocation algorithms for multi-antenna relay-based cellular networks, and new interference management techniques based on cooperation between base stations and relays. It is expected that the research project will yield novel results, such as new relaying and cooperation techniques for cellular networks, fundamental limits and tradeoffs analysis for these techniques, practical algorithms to efficiently exploit them, and deployment tools for relay-based networks. The research outcomes should thus be of significant interest to cellular service providers, equipment manufacturers, standardization organizations and the research community. It should therefore contribute to the successful integration of advanced multi-antenna relaying techniques in future high-speed infrastructure-based cellular networks.
