Calcium Looping Technology, a competitor with amine scrubbing for CO2 capture, is now being demonstrated at the 1.7 MWth scale with plans for a 10 MWth plant. It can also supply heat for fluidized bed gasification processes by enhancing the water-gas shift reaction. However, sorbent regeneration to produce a pure CO2 stream currently requires a costly oxy-fired CFBC calcination system, albeit at one third scale of a full oxy-fuel plant, and practical calcination times demand high temperatures (~900-950°C) that exacerbate the rapid decline in sorbent capture performance.
