This research is on a new paradigm of image formation, called temporal psychovisual modulation (TPVM), which is recently invented by the applicant. TPVM is based on a novel interplay of psychophysics, optoelectronics and mathematical modeling of human vision. To form a class of target images, a high-speed optoelectronic display broadcasts, in visible spectrum, a set of so-called atom frames that are the bases of the image signals computed by non-negative matrix factorization. Through display-synchronized viewing devices that appropriately modulate the light fields of the atom frames, different users can perceive self-intended images by relying on their own cognitive faculty to temporally fuse the modulated atom frames. The TPVM image formation paradigm has a unique and important functionality: concurrent multiple interference-free visual exhibitions on a same physical display medium, which is impossible with existing display technologies. This functionality lends TPVM to many new applications, including scientific/medical visualization, virtual reality, information security, tools for conducting vision-related scientific experiments, consumer electronics, and etc.
