Future use of information and communications technology will shape a new service landscape, in terms of new areas of usage, new ways of service provisioning, new user behavior patterns as well as new dependencies between services and the everyday activities of humans and devices. The expected growth in services is not well supported by the current generation of networks, which are mainly application or service agnostic. New network support for autonomic networks and network management is needed to efficiently support this development. Autonomic networks are therefore envisaged to be the ultimate solutions where networks autonomously monitor their performance identify potential problems plan solutions, and perform corrective actions. The long-term objective of this project is to explore fundamental autonomic networking principles and develop the inherent functionality that leads to self-organizing, self-management, self-diagnosis and self-healing. These self* features also imply that nodes can self-associate to the network without user intervention, and that applications self-discover available network services. The project will focus on three key research challenges, first the development and implementation of an autonomic network architecture augmented with the necessary building blocks and autonomic components; second the design and implementation of a network knowledge base system to model represent, collect, disseminate knowledge to the autonomic components and elements, and third the development of Self-management features that are self-configuration, self-monitoring, and self-healing.
