Equipment for Neutron EDM Experiment at RCNP

A new high-density ultracold neutron (UCN) source will be constructed and developed at TRIUMF over the coming years. The initial experiment using the facility is a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM). A non-zero value of the nEDM would violate time-reversal symmetry. New sources of CP-violation are predicted by the standard model extensions which seek to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. The project is funded by JSPS in Japan, KEK, RCNP, and CFI in Canada (the University of Winnipeg). The MOU was signed in January 2011, and the project has officially started. An initial cooling test of the improved UCN started this fall, and will be ready for the prototype neutron EDM experiment in 2013 and 2014. The present RTI grant request is for the construction of key components for the prototype EDM experiment at RCNP: Remote liquid helium transfer system, DAQ and slow control system, and UCN detector. These components will move to TRIUMF with the UCN source after completion of the RCNP prototype phase of the project.
