In Canada, energy use for space heating/cooling and water heating in the commercial and residential sectors represents 70% of building energy consumption, which itself, accounts for 30% of Canadian energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Solar thermal technologies are well suited to supply these loads and represent one of the most cost-effective uses of renewable energy technology. Coupled with "smart" controls and integrated energy storage, they also have great potential to displace conventional energy consumption and reduce utility peak demands.
