Main group elements in supramolecular and materials chemistry

Our research program will take advantage of the properties of the main-group elements, those in the s- and p-blocks of the periodic table, to create new molecules, organized molecular assemblies, and materials with special structures and functions. The research program stands within the frame of the current renaissance of main-group chemistry; it will build on the results obtained during our previous grant period and will expand into new themes. Molecules that organize themselves with specific conformations (foldamers) and other supramolecular systems will be developed based on the secondary bonding interactions that are characteristic of heavy p-block atoms. Supramolecular synthons based on pairing of two distinct molecules will be created, along with new rings and chains based on the periodic repetition of nitrogen, oxygen and a heavy chalcogen (selenium or tellurium). We will also study compounds of alkali-metal and alkaline-earth cations with molecular conjugated polyanions functionalized with redox active groups.
