A rapid acceleration of human economic activity and population growth over the last few decades is having a profound impact on the environment. An accurate understanding of this complex process, superimposed on natural change, is the meta-goal of modern science, with the outcome potentially affecting every living species on Earth. In order to have accurate estimates of present rates of change and reliable predictions for the future, scientists need to finesse their understanding of Earth's past, and be able to assess the environmental change at all spatial and temporal scales.

在过去几十年中，人类经济活动和人口增长的迅速加速正在对环境产生深远的影响。对这一复杂过程的准确理解，加上自然变化，是现代科学的元目标，其结果可能影响地球上的每一个生物物种。为了准确估计目前的变化率并对未来做出可靠的预测，科学家们需要巧妙地理解地球的过去，并能够在所有空间和时间尺度上评估环境变化。
