We are applying for a high throughput Spectrometer plate reader for detection of UV light, visible light, fluorescence and luminescence in 96 and 384-well plate-format. This is urgently required as the plate spectrometer that was used until very recently no longer works and cannot be repaired - it must be replaced. This instrument is essential for quantitative assays that are performed in the laboratories of the applicants on a very regular basis. These assays include measurements of metabolite concentrations, gene expression, enzyme assays, ligand binding assays and cell growth. The assays are performed on both live biological materials and purified or partially purified protein preparations, and occasionally on other biological materials. Training on a spectrometer with UV light, visible light, fluorescence and luminescence detection capabilities will provide fundamental and basic skills that enhance the technical expertise and experience of our undergraduate and graduate students.
