Power line noise and harmonics have traditionally largely been considered to be a manageable, low-risk issue in electrical power distribution and non-existent in residential loads. However the power landscape for noise-generating devices including point-of-use switching power supplies, Plug-In Electric Vehicles (PEV) and variable speed drives in consumer appliances are becoming the norm. As a result of these trends, the power industry faces a qualitatively new domain in regard to power-line noise and harmonics that must be measured, modeled and addressed with new distribution system equipment and asset management strategies.
