A sensor is a device that responds to an input, such as a physical or chemical change and converts its response into an output. Nanotechnology is enabling the development of "nano enabled sensors" with superior sensitivity, accuracy and speed. One method for assisting in the development of nano-enabled sensors is termed Ion Beam Sputtering, whereby extremely thin layers of metals and other materials can be laid down on a surface. This method allows for the creation of superior optics, and nano enabled sensors. These sensors have applications for improving a number of technologies within high impact areas of the Canadian economy, including: health and medical; oil and gas; agriculture; mining; workplace safety; and manufacturing.
