Organic Chemistry is the science that deals with living matter and the physiological processes that sustain survival. The synthesis of small organic molecules has been the foundation of the pharmaceutical industry having provided miracle drugs to combat a wide-cross section of diseases over many decades. Academic research has contributed to this process through basic work delineating the relationship between structure, property and function. In the process, excellent training is provided to young men and women who go on to contribute in a significant way to more target- and disease-oriented research in pharmaceutical and biotech companies with the objective of discovering better medicines. My research group at the University of Montreal has had a significant impact in the training of highly qualified personnel over the years. Among the nearly 300 group alumni are those who were responsible for the discovery and development of new and effective medicines with their respective companies. Those who have chosen an academic career have continued the tradition of excellence in training their own students. Over the years, my group has been involved in diverse areas of research that can be described as biology-inspired and chemically-driven. A particularly rewarding activity has been the synthesis of drug (i.e. medicinal agent) prototypes as proofs of concept with promising activities against cancer, cardiovascular disease, bacterial and viral infection, and Alzheimer's disease among others. Industrial collaborating partners have greatly benefitted from this.
