The twin beacons of physical insight and technology have always guided astronomy. Insight has guided the questions and technology has enabled data collection reaching back to the dawn of time. Significant challenges remain and, for the next generation of extremely large telescope (ELT), adaptive optics (AO) is critical. The integration of ELTs and AO generates many exciting possibilities; e.g., directly imaging young planets or observing the nearest star-forming regions. The University of Victoria Adaptive Optics Laboratory is an international leader in AO and has undertaken key research for North American and European ELT programs.
