Regional maps of rock and mineral distribution typically do not convey sufficient detail to support mineral exploration activities in the Canadian North as well as to investigate the genesis of economic metal deposits. Without accurate and detailed maps, Canada is unable to: i) identify mineral deposits important to our economy and improve the geological understanding of Northern regions, ii) develop adequate policies for the exploitation of these resources, and iii) provide economical development options for Canadian industry. This proposal will address the need for detailed map information using spectral imaging to develop a predictive capability to maps rock and mineral distribution. As a starting point, focus will be on the analysis of drill core samples with the aim to develop the mineral estimation capability. A long term aim is to transfer these capabilities to airborne and satellite imaging for regional investigations.
