Plate tectonics has formed the present day continents over the course of Earth history. The continents have grown through a range of processes that include continent-continent collisions and volcanic activity. The proposed research will study how these processes occur today and this will give insight into how the continents evolved in the past. This research will use geophysical imaging of the subsurface to study the properties of the Earth's crust and mantle from the surface to a depth of 200 km in two locations. This will use a technique called magnetotellurics that utilizes low frequency radio waves to image the subsurface resistivity - a parameter that is sensitive to the presence of water and partially molten rock.
