Natural gas is expected to continue to grow as an energy source over the coming decades; it is anticipated that natural gas will account for 1/3 of the world's primary energy supply by 2030. Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel so its use as a primary source of energy is a logical transition to more environmentally-friendly fuel sources of the future. A significant component of the growth in natural gas is expected to come from so-called unconventional gas resources, such as low-permeability (tight) gas (TG) reservoirs, coalbed methane (CBM), and shale gas (SG). There are many challenges to the efficient, economic, environmentally-friendly recovery of unconventional gas - properties of the reservoir that control fluid storage and transport are poorly understood.
