Pipes in industrial settings such as petrochemical plants are frequently buried underground, where they are protected from certain types of potential damage, and do not pose a visual barrier or physical impediment to roads. However, there is a significant potential for corrosion on the outer wall surfaces if the soil contains aggressive chemical agents; such corrosion may lead to drastic reduction in the pipe wall thickness, and eventual failure of the pipe. The difficulty is compounded by the inaccessibility of buried sections of the pipe to conventional inspection.
