Techniques for resource management on clouds

The use of cloud computing that provides resources on demand to both enterprises as well as users of scientific and engineering applications is spreading rapidly. Clouds provide various types of resource including both computing and storage resources. Appropriate management of cloud resources in a data centre is crucial for the effective use of the underlying resource pool leading to the satisfaction of the cloud users as well as a high revenue for the cloud service provider. Proposed research concerns resource allocation and scheduling for satisfying service level agreements associated with requests that are key factors for achieving a high quality of experience by the user and boosting the revenue earned by the service provider. The focus of this project is on resource management techniques for providing end-to-end service level agreements for requests that require service from a number of resources in sequence, a problem that has not been addressed effectively by the exiting literature. In addition to producing innovative techniques that will contribute to the state of the art the results of this project are expected to effectively contribute to the business of Huawei, the industrial partner in this CRD project. Student training is also an important component of this research project and will enhance the pool of highly qualified personnel that Canada critically needs for this highly competitive emerging market of cloud computing.
