This proposal is a continuation of a previous IRC which developed bio-indicators of radiation stress in non-human species exposed to acute external low dose gamma and x-irradiation of fish. The goal of the renewal proposal is to expand the dosimetric approaches and radiation types used to include acute and chronic exposures to alpha, beta and gamma emitting radioisotopes involved in mining and generation of nuclear energy using CANDU reactors. The focus will be on uranium decay products (including radon daughters), caesium and tritium. In each case contamination of aquatic ecosystems is an environmental issue in Canada either due to the everyday processes involved in power generation using nuclear energy, or because of contamination from nuclear tests or Chernobyl accident fallout.
