The need for low-cost adaptive antennas is widespread in many existing and next-generation communication systems, particularly in the areas of radar, satellite communications and remote-sensing. While reflector antennas are useful in many applications, they can only be mechanically scanned resulting in limited agility and reliability. On the other hand, antennas arrays, which offer high speed beam-scanning are tremendously costly due to their large hardware footprint. Recently, reconfigurable reflectarrays have emerged as a promising low-cost alternative that combines the best features of these platforms. These antennas are finding applications in automotive radars, mm-wave communication systems, and aerospace systems. Ingegneria Dei Sistemi (IDS) is a global leader in the development of high-technology solutions in the fields of naval, aeronautical, air navigation, georadar, and space systems. This project is aims to develop accurate analysis and design tools for modelling reconfigurable reflectarrays in a commercial antenna design tool produced by IDS. This will enable end users to successfully design and analyze this emerging antenna architecture with ease, allowing this antenna architecture to expand into a greater number of commercial applications while at the same time providing unique capabilities to IDS and their customers. This project has broad benefits within the information and communication technology sector in Canada terms of technology development as well as the training of highly qualified personnel.
