Si added diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings may be of significant value for engineering applications where low COF and high wear resistance is required for the extended service life. Manufacturing systems such as hot/warm forming dies, stamping, machining tools, as well as critical tribological systems such as the piston rings in combustion engines are among the components that will benefit from these new coatings manufactured by Sputtek Inc. The proposed collaborative research project will focus on the deposition of DLC coatings with different Si amounts and explore the tribological properties of the promising coatings at different test temperatures and atmospheres.
