Throughout Canada and many other urbanizing areas around the world, stormwater best management practices (BMPs) are regularly used to treat and control rainfall runoff. While these BMPs can be used to control stormwater at one or more of its various stages, from source to outfall; in Ontario, the vast majority of BMPs which have been implemented are at the point of discharge. This implementation of BMPs often still results in high runoff volumes and pollutant loadings, which continue to have adverse effects on the health of the receiving waters.
