Alkali-aggregate reactivity is a widespread problem, inflicting serious damage to a large number of concrete structures in Canada. The problem occurs when aggregates having characteristics conducive to reaction with alkalies are used in concrete made with ordinary portland cement incorporating a significant content of alkalies. The reaction initiates when concrete is exposed to moisture, resulting in expansion and cracking, normally observed several years after field exposure.
