The Faculty of Engineering at Memorial University is undergoing unprecedented growth. There are plans to establish a world class Energy Center at MUN. The Machines and Drives lab, developed by the applicant, will be a key part of this center. Over the last two decades, the interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine has emerged as the most efficient device for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and visa versa. This has meant energy cost savings worth billions of dollars to countries all over the world. The contributions of the applicant to the design, development and successful applications of IPM machine technology, which were all funded by NSERC, have been widely acknowledged worldwide. An interior permanent magnet machine is a hybrid electro-magnetic energy converter combining induction, reluctance and hysteresis phenomena. Many of the design challenges of the IPM machine have been progressively solved by the applicant over the years. These challenges include: design and prototyping of sintered permanent magnet materials (NdBFe) for industrial type automobile traction machines; development of new pulse-width modulated, delta-modulated and wavelet-modulated inverter topologies for IPM machines; development of phasor angle control and indirect vector control techniques for IPM machines; design and experimental implementation of intelligent motion control algorithms for IPM machines; development of analytical and finite element models for IPM machines; development of sensorless and bearingless IPM machines as well as protection and diagnostic algorithms for IPM generators and motors. These works have resulted in over two hundred IEEE transaction papers, a large number of conference publications, several patents as well as IEEE standards/guides, industrial reports and products. They were carried out successfully with the assistance of PhD and MEng graduate students, undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research engineers. Recently, there has been a demand for more advanced IPM machines. This has given rise to more challenges and design problems. These are the subject of this proposal and include: variation of reluctance without a varying air gap, increasing the axis saliency by magnet orientation, line starting of IPM motors, thermo-magnetic stress analysis of IPM machines and development of energy efficient variable horsepower drive systems for automobile and railway traction. The objectives of the proposed research for the coming 5-year period are: a) analysis, design and development of a line start IPM motor which has better performance than an induction motor of same rating (b) development of finite element models for hybrid IPM machines c) development of thermal models for IPM machines, d) stress analysis of IPM machines for static and dynamic loads e) vector field analysis of IPM machines in the flux weakening mode of operation and f) determination of the optimum magnet shape, position and orientation inside the rotor. These will be realized with the help of 6 PhD students, 2 Masters students, 5 post doctoral fellows and 7 undergraduate students. The scientific approaches will involve detailed design, analysis, development and testing of system models of machines and associated electronics and control interfaces. The topics of the proposed research on advanced electric machines and associated power electronics are significant for economic exploitations in Canada. A five-year grant of $66,200 per year is requested to achieve the objectives of the proposed research.
