The objective of the proposed research is to contribute to knowledge in the following fundamental problems of fluid mechanics. 1. Turbulence structure and turbulent mixing: i) measurements of passive scalar dispersion from a continuous point source in sheared turbulence. al mixing layer in sheared turbulence; ii) measurements of probability density functions and fine-structure properties of temperature fluctuations in a thermal mixing layer embedded in sheared turbulence; iii) interactions of coherent structures in USF with structures near stationary and moving walls. 2. Vortex dynamics: i) interactions between a wing-tip vortex and free-stream turbulence; ii) vortex instability under forced periodic and random excitations; iii) vortex shedding near a moving wall. 3. Cardiovascular mechanics: i) in vitro studies of blood flow near a bileaflet mechanical heart valve in pulsatile flow through a physiologically accurate model of the aorta; ii) numerical simulations of blood flow and myocardium motion in the canine heart; iii) numerical simulations of blood flow in diaphragm-type ventricular assist devices. This long-term research on fundamental engineering problems will be conducted in parallel with experimental and computational research contributing to the solution of pressing technological problems of the nuclear and aerospace industries, which is financed by CRD grants by NSERC and the Industry and is unrelated to the present proposal.
