Discoveries in extragalactic magnetic fields and related plasma and particle astrophysics

My research will explore and role of magnetic fields and related magnetic phenomena on all scales in outer space. The approach is multidisclipinary: It involves antenna engineering concepts applied to the World's largest radio telescopes, concepts of energy transfer by electomagnetic beams and the behaviour of ionized gases up to the highest (including relativistic) energies. We are on the path to solving deep mysteries involving the complex interactions between magnetic fields and ionized plasmas arising from the central Black Holes of galaxies. The clarification of these mysteries may give the key to understanding how to make magnetic fusion energy work on Earth, and explain the mechanisms causing the enormous transfers of magneto-plasma energy in space. This, in turn, is interconnected with the mystery of how galaxies and stars (and planets) arise. A new discovery I have made, published in Astrophysical Journal Letters October 2011, reports the first determination of the electric current in a beam that propagates into intergalactic space from the central Black Hole a galaxy. It is the largest electric current ever measured, ~3 x 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 Amps (10^18 ampères). It will have a profound effect on our physical understanding of how these most powerful energy transfers occur.
