Traditional network infrastructure incorporates little to no cognition. Cognition-based systems can intelligently and dynamically alter and reconfigure themselves to enhance resource management. They can also learn from past situations, decisions and actions in order to improve future outcomes. The goal of the proposed research program (RP) is to invent and analyze cognitive distributed signal processing technologies that monitor and manage spectral activities and changes in wireless communication networks.
This RP will yield solutions in the form of advanced and low-cost algorithms that are the key to next-generation technology. Canada's communication infrastructure holds a significant place in the economy, accounting for 3.2% of total employment and generating over $168 billion in revenue. This RP in the area of management of scarce distributed resources promises to enhance the efficiency of this critical infrastructure.
As modern society increasingly relies on mobile connectivity, spectrum demand is increasing. This ever-increasing demand has led to re-evaluation of spectrum utilization and highlighted the necessity for cognitive technologies to gather and act on information about the medium and users to improve network efficiency, save energy, and lower costs. This RP will develop solutions for the problems that arise when distributed elements must make a collective set of decisions and have limited ability to exchange information.
Canada's communications industries stand to benefit from the outcomes of this RP as the cognitive paradigm promotes more efficient resource use. Research advances to be achieved by this RP are vital to Canada's economic competitiveness, and their success in increasing efficiency will also have a positive environmental impact. In addition, four PhD, one MSc and five undergraduate students will be trained in leading-edge technology, and as graduates will help to meet growing demand for expertise in this area.
