Today's wireless communication services have come a long way since the introduction of the first generation of cellular systems in the early 1980s. The demand for wireless access in high-speed multi-media applications, environmental monitoring and telemedicine has been increasing steadily. New generations of wireless systems and networks can only accommodate this demand by relying on better resource management and improved transmission technologies. It has been recognized that future wireless communication systems and networks will be based on the emerging technology of cooperative/relay communications. The concept of cooperative and relay communications is that nodes (or users) in a network cooperate to transmit data from a source to a destination. This technology has many potential advantages over conventional point-to-point communications, including configuration flexibility, better coverage, improved performance, higher capacity, etc.
There have been extensive research activities in cooperative/relay communications after the publication of seminal papers by Sendonaris et al. (2003) and Laneman (2004). It is now understood that potential gains of cooperative/relay communications can only be realized when the right approach is applied to a specific application scenario. To bring cooperative/relay communications into practice, continued research efforts are still much needed. This research proposal shall look at practical methods and techniques for improving the reliability and/or capacity of wireless relay networks by allowing multiple transmissions to take place simultaneously over a common transmission medium. The key technical issue to be addressed is interference management, both at the relay and destination nodes. The proposed research includes both analysis and computer simulation to develop and evaluate performance of the new methods and techniques. The successes of the proposed research program should enhance Canada's competitive position in providing reliable and efficient transmission of information over wireless communication systems and networks.
